I have a 1986 Savage, and my slide problems began august 2002, i disassembled the carburetor and found the slide had a discolored spot on the front (The engine side.) i soaked the whole carb in vinegar to clean out the crud, it (the spot) turned silver while the rest of the slide stayed black. I run the bike everyday (almost) back and forth to work, It hesitates when moving along the flat areas and is good in acceleration, deceleration and idling. the plug is a nice tan dry color, I have the stock 147.5 main jet, white spacer out and a straight pipe from mac exhausts specifically made for the savage by mac. I am planning on replacing the slide pending your results on color and performance once installed. I have bought a new 150 and 152.5 mikuni main jet and a #50 pilot jet. I am planning on trying the 150 with a k&N air filter , if i can ever find one. Hope your approach brings results, I know I appreciate it alot. This bike would be a sweet ride if it would stop acting up. I've checked the spark with an inline tester as well, it is fine. so its not spark or timing. and the valves were recently adjusted.
